Lihtan Therapy Collective: Counselling clinic located in Calgary, Alberta

Ensuring that the design fully meets the needs and desires of our clients is crucial, regardless of the project's size. Lihtan Therapy Collective opened in July 2024, but their new space prior to the renovation did not completely align with their requirements. Here is how we tackled their concerns.

The primary consideration in the current space was ensuring sound privacy, given the confidential nature of our clients' work. It was imperative to address the sound transmission through the existing plenum space. The office walls only extended to the underside of the T-Bar ceiling, with some lacking insulation, while the fronts of the offices were glazed.

What was done to address the acoustic levels

  • existing glazing replaced acoustic glazing

  • A Plenum barrier between all offices was installed

  • Acoustic wall coverings used as feature walls in each of the private offices

  • sound masking used in waiting area- gentle calming music

The client was initially attracted to this space due to the abundance of natural light that illuminated the corridor and waiting area. The design aimed to preserve this natural light while also ensuring privacy. As a result, opaque privacy film was applied to all the new acoustic glazing in the offices.

The client expressed the need for warm ambient lighting in their offices to ensure that their clients feel comfortable within the space. Extra electrical outlets were provided for the use of task lighting and floor lights, with the ability to switch off the main office lights as needed.

The client conveyed a preference for a serene and inviting atmosphere that would align with their brand identity. To achieve this, we employed a palette of warm neutral colors, complemented by organic materials such as wood and greenery. Furthermore, we integrated the green hues from their branding into a prominent feature wall within their designated waiting area.

Finish selections reflecting branding

We really put some thought into picking and arranging the furniture to make the office feel more like home and welcoming to clients. We ended up going with furniture from West Elm's contract division.
